MitraClip for Heart Valve Disease

MitraClip is a minimally invasive, catheter-based treatment used to repair a leaking mitral valve without the need for open-heart surgery. The procedure is commonly performed in patients with mitral regurgitation (MR), a condition in which the mitral valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak backward into the left atrium.

What is Mitral Regurgitation?

The mitral valve lies between the left atrium and left ventricle of the heart. When it becomes damaged or fails to close properly, blood leaks backward with each heartbeat, causing the heart to work harder.

Common symptoms include:

What is the MitraClip Procedure?

MitraClip is a form of Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER).

  1. A catheter is inserted through a vein in the groin.
  2. The catheter is advanced to the heart through the blood vessels.
  3. The MitraClip device is positioned on the mitral valve.
  4. The clip grasps the valve leaflets and brings them together, reducing the leakage.
  5. Blood flow becomes more efficient and symptoms improve.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes 2–4 hours.
