Radial angioplasty is a procedure performed by an Interventional (Medical) Cardiologist on people suffering from coronary artery disease. Blood circulation is blocked by HDL cholesterol in the artery, and angioplasty is performed to remove it. Radial angioplasty is done through the wrist area and has its own merits.
WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE LIKE?
- A long, thin tube called a catheter is inserted into the vein or artery in the wrist and extended to the heart by an expert cardiologist.
- A balloon is attached at the end of the catheter to open the blocked arteries, and a small metal mesh-like device called a stent is placed inside to support the blood vessel.
- Pressure is applied to the incision to stop the blood flow.
- The wound or incision area is bandaged after the procedure.

- Patients with respiratory and pulmonary issues.
- Patients with spine problems, including back pain, who have difficulty maintaining one position for long hours.
- Patients who are obese.
- Elderly patients.
HOW DOES THE TRANSRADIAL ACCESS BENEFIT WOMEN?
Performing a cardiac operation through the transradial route can be of enormous psychological benefit to conservative Indian women. Femoral access through the groin region during cardiac catheterisation is a cause for apprehension in many women. They would much rather opt for the transradial access routine through the wrist.
WILL IT COST MORE THAN TRADITIONAL METHODS?
No. Despite its multiple benefits, the cost of having a transradial catheterisation is the same as that of using other methods.
